Electricity can kill. Government statistics
show that over 15% of all fires in UK homes are
caused by electrical faults. In 2006, this resulted
in 19 deaths and 1117 injuries. There were also
21 deaths and 2788 injuries caused by electric
shocks in homes.
Modern living has meant we use more and recent surveys show that over 2 million homes in the UK need some kind of electrical repair. Older houses are especially at risk.
For instance, just
20 years ago the average UK home had a hi-fi
system and one TV or video, whereas today it is
more likely that there are at least two TVs, a
video, a DVD player and a computer, printer or
scanner. So the possible risk of electrical
accidents in the home is higher now than ever

Increasing legislation is being enforced to try and prevent a number of accidents and deaths from faulty installations and repairs. If you live in England or Wales especially, you are now required by law to use an electrician competent to current standards (PART P and 17th Edition IEE wiring regulations BS7671:2008), to carry out most electrical work. You are not only risking penalties, but also your life.
what to look for
Cables in your home are usually run inside the walls and under floors, and fuse boxes are often hidden away, making it easy to forget that for safety and peace of mind your electrical systems do need checking for safety and to make sure they function as they should. Cables, switches, socket-outlets, and other accessories deteriorate overtime with use and even misuse. There are several signs to look out for that indicates the age of your electrical system and suggest that it may need some repair or testing:
Cables coated in black rubber - black rubber was phased out in the 1960's.
Cables coated in lead or fabric are even older. Modern cables use PVC insulation.
A fuse box with a wooden back, cast iron switches, a haphazard mixture of circuit boxes.
Older round pin sockets and round light switches, braided flex hanging from ceiling roses to light fittings, black switches, or sockets mounted in skirting boards.
